Monday May 23rd Day 83

Chapter 31 China

Objective: Upon completion of this chapter students will be able to:

* describe the results of China's contracts with the West

* identify the internal conflict that led to a Communist takeover

* describe the purpose and results of the Great Leap Forward

* explain how a series of modernizations attempted to change China

Rationale: Most students today only know recent China. The Olympics were the only visual students have been shown of where China is as a country. which leaves out where China have come from. Exposing students to the history of China (recently) moving from a disjointed agricultural based country to a Communist revolution will fill-in some of the missing pieces to China's current political structure. Tiananmen Square will be a pivotal part of this process.

Evidence: By understanding the various political changes and the various factors influencing those changes,  students will be able to articulate an accurate timeline of events which shaped the course of China's recent past, and has brought it to a modern day one party run country.

Objective: Shown a presentation covering the 9 main world religions,  students will be able to identify various unique attributes the the world's main religions and define their differences in a comparative list. In addition students will be able to 

• Compare and contrast beliefs of religions and faith traditions;

• Evaluate similarities and differences in belief systems and rituals;

Rationale: Religion affects many aspects of public life. Governmental policies, daily practices, feelings of right and wrong, societal roles for men, women, children, etc, many times have a connection to a particular faith. Understanding the various belief system around the world will help students understand the actions taken by people of other countries as well as inside the USA.

Evidence: By comparing the various foundations, tenets, and beliefs, students will begin to identify the characteristics of a faith and the reasons behind those actions.
